After 13.5 years as a loyal 1Password user, I'm hitting a breaking point with their browser extension. What used to be a seamless part of my daily workflow has become a constant source of friction.
I've been there since version 3 in 2011, adapted to their subscription model, and even brought my family and business along. But the current state of their browser extension is making me question everything.
The core issue? They moved from a native Mac app integration to a browser-based extension. This architectural change has introduced lag, inconsistencies, and frustrating UX issues that simply didn't exist before.
Here's what I'm experiencing daily: - Several seconds delay when unlocking 1Password through the browser - Extension frequently misidentifying websites - CMD + \ shortcut becoming unreliable - Having to resort to the desktop app and manual copy-paste
This is happening on a maxed-out MacBook Pro with 96GB RAM running the latest MacOS. If it's struggling on this hardware, I can't imagine the experience on lower-end machines.
The irony is that the version I bought in 2011 worked better than what we have today. Back then, it was a true Mac app that "just worked" - the kind of software that made you recommend it to everyone you knew.
I've filed support tickets and talked to coworkers experiencing the same issues. While I desperately want to stick with 1Password (the thought of migrating my family to a new password manager is painful), they need to seriously reconsider their current technical direction.
To 1Password: Please bring back the native experience. Your early success wasn't just about features - it was about delivering a seamless, Mac-native experience that felt right at home on our machines.
